Weather beautiful all week
About twenty minutes out by the edge of town but the walk along the prom lovely
Food in hotel very good - almost family run
Pool area so quiet but that's what we needed
Not much to do in evening unless you walked into town
Lovely shops in alghero marina stunning
The
beach at the other end of the town nest the pine forest was the
cleanest beach I've ever seen and waters so so clear a definite visit a
few times while you are there
The hotel had a small lovely cove ideal just opposite hotel.
We had a truly lovely holiday ... Well be back !!

I
recently stayed at the Calabona Hotel on Sept. 28,29 at the start of a
cycling trip and the Calabona Hotel was my first stop (where my cycling
group met). It proved to be an excellent start to the trip. The hotel is
located about as far away from the city center as any hotel in Alghero
and it is a good 20 minute walk into town. That said, the upside is that
the hotel is free of the street noise, loud music, etc., that is part
of the Alghero late night scene and you will get a quiet, peaceful night
of sleep. The adjacent beachfront property is beautiful and relatively
unspoiled.
My room was spacious, nicely furnished and spotless. The
bathroom was modern, toiletries of high quality and the entire staff was
friendly, helpful and welcoming. The breakfast buffet was exceptional.
My sense during the two day stay was that someone on staff was in the
hotel supervising its operation and attending to details throughout the
day. Simply put, this is a fine choice for experienced, adult travelers.

Quite a pleasant room, although for 150 euros (which is more than we pay in
Paris), it might have been nice if the airconditioning worked on a sweltering
night. We ate in the restaurant, and it was pleasant. If you have breakfast, get
there in plenty of time - it finishes at 10am and on the dot of ten the lady
started clearing the buffet - by 10:10 there was nothing left to indicate that
breakfast had ever existed. Perhaps a petulant criticism, but if I was running
the place, I wouldn't allow anything to be cleared before the last guest left
the room.

We have just returned from a 2 week stay at Hotel Calabona. From the
minute we arrived I knew we had choosen the right hotel! The room booked
for us by Lastminute.com wasn't going to accommodate us all (family of
4) even though we had double checked this with a call to Lastminute when
booking....... however thanks to the friendly and helpful reception
staff this wasn't a problem, we were shown some different rooms that
would accommodate us and we were offered one of these at no extra cost.
The family room we had on the ground floor was perfect! Ground floor
meant no sea view but the benefits of the room leading straight out to
the pool when you have 2 very active little boys completely outweighed
that! It meant a lot more relaxation for me and my husband!
The staff
were second to none! (My husband and I have both come from hotel
careers in London, so we know the hard work that goes into the effective
running of a hotel but we are also particularily intolerant when it
comes to bad service) Every member of staff that we encountered at Hotel
Calabona was friendly, polite, efficient and interested in doing their
job properly! It was SO refreshing! Well done to the management at this
hotel, your team are a credit to you.
We were staying B&B at the
hotel but also ate by the pool some lunchtimes too. The choice at
Breakfast was great, we never tired of it as there was such variety.
Lunch when we had it was also very good, lovely salads! We didn't eat in
the restaurant in the evenings as we felt it a bit too formal with a 7
and 10yr old and we enjoyed hunting down a different restaurant every
night in Alghero! I think you could eat out for a month and still not
try them all! Some very good ones off the tourist track recommended by
tripadvisor!
Our room as I mentioned earlier couldn't have been in a
better location for our needs. It was spacious, plenty of storage, very
efficient air con keeping us lovely and cool even when it was nudging 40
degrees. It was cleaned at almost the same time every day, and it was
never a problem if you wanted them to come back a bit later. The hotel
was spotless and maintained to a good standard.
The pool is a great size and is kept very clean. There is no race for sunbeds in the morning which was lovely.
The
bar area is quiet in the evening but I think that is because everyone
heads into town to enjoy all the street entertainers and buzzing streets
of the old town. We found it lovely wandering back at about 10.30ish,
getting the boys into bed and then sitting on the pool terrace (another
great advantage to a ground floor room) with a bottle of lovely
Sardinian wine. It wasn't busy but we usually ended up in conversation
with someone. Also Michele, the gentleman who ran the pool terrace bar
at lunch and in the evening was a star. Always knew what everyone was
drinking, recommended good wines and was a great source of knowledge as
well as great company.
The location of the hotel is lovely. Its
about a 15 minute stroll along the most beautiful coastline. The
pavement is really wide, well lit and always busy with people out for a
stroll, run or cycle.
We wish we were still there! We would definitely good back and would highly recommend Hotel Calabona.

We have just returned from a fantastic two weeks at Hotel Calabona.
We opted for a superior room which was well decorated and big enough.
Only negatives about the room was lack of drawer/ shelf space. There is
plenty of hanging space , but no where to put small things. Also the
temperature of the shower was temperamental. The hotel is spotlessly
clean. We only stayed b&b , the breakfasts were good lovely fruit
and freshly made pastries , the best part of the breakfast was sitting
outside looking at the beautiful seaview. We ate at the pool at
lunchtime and the food was very good , great salads. The pool area is
nice , but quiet you don't have activities or any music, just nice and
relaxing. I think the hotel could do more with the bar area at night we
hardly ever saw anyone sitting having a drink in the evening. The hotel
is a good 15mins walk from the town and once you've got to the top of
the hill it's a lovely walk. Alghero is packed with super restaurants
and bars, which did not come to life till after 10pm. The best part of
hotel Calabona is the staff who all were great , with a few tweaks the
hotel would be fabulous.

The staff at this hotel are 5 star. Can't fault them. However, the
photographer who took the photo of the hotel for the holiday brochures
deserves an award! The hotel is a bit run down and sad. There is little
to no aircon in the corridoors outside the bedrooms or in reception so
it struggles to cope in 40 degree temperatures.
The rooms are
adequate, the aircon worked well, but the beds are incredibly hard and
so are the pillows. I hardly slept for a week, although I know that some
people may be OK with hard mattresses. Also there was a really yappy
dog somewhere in the hotel, staying with a guest. Take your earplugs.
(not just for the dogs: this is truly a family hotel and there were a
large number of wailing children. Not the hotel's fault, I know, but
this was the year we decided that our next holiday will be in a
Child-Free hotel)
The best thing about this hotel (apart from the
staff) is the lovely clean pool. It's very large for such a small hotel,
and has a couple of 'Fast Current' lanes, which you can switch on to
swim against, if you're feeling really fit. We spent DAYS trying to work
out where the shower was. It's hidden behind some sunbeds in a corner.
The hotel doesn't make much of an effort to get people to shower before
going in the pool (only one tiny notice)
There are plenty of sunbeds,
so no towels drawn at dawn. The 'private beach' is actually a public
beach with private hotel sunbeds on it. It is very popular with the
locals and there is a lot of seaweed.
One problem is that people
persist in hanging wet towels over their balconies, so if you take an
aperatif before dinner in the hotel courtyard/bar, you are surrounded by
people's washing and towels. Hardly atmospheric, also there is no view
of the sea from there.
TIP: towards the end of our stay we discovered
that there is a wonderful terrace on the third floor, which is actually
communal, although I suspect that people with rooms opening onto it
would prefer that you didn't use it! It's a LOVELY place to sit with a
drink on an evening to watch the sun go down. Sadly, the hotel have
missed an opportunity here. We felt that they could have had a bar up
there.
The restaurant staff were fantastic, but the food quality was
variable. Unfortunately, it's situated in a basement with no view. If we
hadn't taken the half board option we would have eaten out in Alghero
each night as there are so many fantastic eating places there. Most
guests in fact, seem to do this, so as there are so few guests at
dinner, it lacks a little in atmosphere.
Breakfast are taken in a marquee outside. They are good.
The
walk into Alghero is very pleasant. Takes about 20 minutes along the
seafront, although you have to keep leaping out of the way of cyclists
who have their own lane on the pavement.
If you book a room on a high
floor, ask for a room on the Alghero town side as your view will be of
the sea, and the courtyard. If you get a room on the other 'wing' you
will get a view of the sea as well as some graffitti-ridden concrete.
Low floor rooms really only overlook the courtyard/bar.
There is no entertainment at this hotel. It is very quiet.

Have just returned after two weeks at Calabona - and I am feeling totally relaxed and pampered!
Everybody
in the staff are extreemly helpfull and friendly, and i will not name
anybody specifically, as i do not want to forget anybody. I have used
the massage several times, and that was perfect. I also went to an
agriturismo, and i must say that the Sardic evening the hotel presented a
few days later was as good, and on some things even better! Delicious
dinner every time!.
I do hope to return, and this will definitely be my first choice in Alghero.

Just returned from two week holiday here. Everybody from the
chambermaids to the waiters and reception staff will go out of their way
to make your holiday here special. We had such a lovely time thanks to
the staff. Hotel is very clean. Food is great. Location is perfect.
about a mile and a half into town which is a great way to burn all the
extra calories from the fab dinners. We were sad to leave but will
certainly be coming back and will be telling everybody to stay there
that we know.
THANK YOU for a great time and relaxing holiday.

My husband and I booked directly with the hotel shortly before arriving on the 7th July.
From
receiving the caring email re booking a transfer taxi to the little
gift we received on leaving the hotel we knew we had found a little gem.
ALL the staff from the life guard to head receptionist were so genuinely friendly ,courteous and hard working.
The room was always cleaned to a high standard and was very comfortable.
Although the hotel seemed quiet that suited us as we wanted a total rest.
The Pork on the Sardinian evening was delicious (something I don't normally eat!)
Well done Hotel Calabona.
